Derek Jeter Shows Us All How to Move On

If you have not read Derek Jeter's open letter announcing his retirement, I recommend it to you. He posted it on Facebook yesterday. Disclaimer: I hate Facebook and I never go on it. But hey, we are talking Derek Jeter here! In my view, Jeter is one of  the classiest athletes ever, and undoubtedly one of the cutest.  So I went there......I was not disappointed.

Here is the letter in it's entirety (since I went there so you don't have to):

Derek's letter has lessons for all of us baby boomers about how we ought to be facing our own transitions. Here's a couple of things I particularly admire:

Genuine gratitude – the letter is laced with his acknowledgment of all the people who helped him along the way. Bravo.

No whining – he makes mention of the physical realities of aging without complaint. It is what it is, and nothing more.

Getting on with it – he doesn't tease or try to be coy about future plans,  just says it straight out. Retirement at the end of the 2014 season. Period.

All in all I have to say this letter just makes me want to hug him. Or maybe it's those smoky green eyes......

So good for you, Derek! And may we all learn from your example.
